5-Out Motion Offense with Tobin Anderson
On this A Quick Timeout podcast, Iona’ Coach Tobin Anderson shares ideas for teaching 5-Out motion offense, screening actions for half-court offense, and suggestions for motivating players through goal-setting.
Q: How do players know which screen to use within the action?
Anderson: A lot of it is based on where you’re at on the court. The guy close to the middle of floor a lot of times should be the screener. If we’re tight, we're going to set back screens. So if we're tight, we're going to set some back screens with either a guard or a big guy. If we’re wide, we love setting flares. We’ll set a bunch of ball screens - a lot of times it's big guys, but we’ll also go guard-to-guard and ghost and play off that. But you know, you got to give a visual and verbal. Visual is a fist in the air. Verbal is talking about what the screen is going to be. Talking early, loud, and often. I actually think you should talk more on offense than you do on defense.
