Two years ago, Iona’s Tobin Anderson jumped on the national stage after his #16 FDU Knights upset #1 Purdue in the NCAA Tournament. After that, Anderson’s unique pressing defense and 5-Out motion offense began receiving attention from coaches at all levels.
Here are diagrams, film clips, practice clips, and my personal clinic notes from Anderson’s Motion Offense…
4 Rules for Offense
Get a shot - no turnovers!
Get a good shot.
If you’re not open, cut to get open.
If you can’t get open, screen to get a teammate open.
Alignment and Player Movement
The key is to start high and wide. You want the ball above the hash mark and the wings close to the sidelines.
When a pass is made, the passer and the receiver work in tandem. For the receiver of the pass, the first two seconds are his on the catch. Players are taught to either shoot it or drive it based on how the defense plays things. For the passer, after he makes the pass, he passes, cuts, and fills. The opposite wing fills behind then backdoors instead of completing the fill.
