How to Actually "Play Fast" on Offense (Part 2)
Coach Dave Davis, Transition SSG, 4v4v4 Full Court SSG, FREE Coaching Clinic
An Inside Look at Dave Davis Top Scoring Offense
This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, Coach Dave Davis is back to talk about playing fast. This time, you'll hear how his offensive system was designed to be one of the top scoring teams in all of NCAA.
Q: Everyone says that want to play fast. Your teams really played fast. How’d you get that buy-in?
Davis: There was a mindset in everything - it's all about us. It's not about you. They're our shots, not yours. And then praising passes. Praising the paint touch that hit the corner that led to the one more wide open three.
Every drill we did, only the whistle stops it. So, where most people do many halfcourt drills, 1-on-1, 2-on-2, any halfcourt drills - those didn't end for us. We'd inbound the ball and take off with it. Every drill was full court. Everything to build the “next play mentality.” Play quicker than they do.

SSG of the Week: Transition Build-Up
I was asked by a coach for ways of how to teach his team to play faster on offense. I can’t say there’s any one thing that will magically make them play faster; however, there are several small-sided games and full court games we use to teach pace, including this transition game. It builds up from 2-on-1 all the way to 5-on-5. Use it to work on transition offense, transition defense, half-court offense, and half-court defense.

SSG of the Week (2): 4v4v4
Speaking of playing fast…
4v4v4 is a great game for teaching players to play with pace. Play with a 15 second shot clock. If the offense (black numbers) score, they stay on offense and transition to the other end (Frame 2). If the defense gets a stop (blue numbers in Frame 2), then they become the offense. We usually play for 6-8 minutes. Great for cardio and learning to play quickly!
