Dave Davis on Playing Fast
Every coach today says they want to "play fast." Most of their teams don't actually play fast. Dave Davis' teams play FAST. This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, you'll hear how his offensive and defensive systems create a system of play matched by few.
Miller: When people hear “play fast,” they may think Grinnell’s style with all 3PAs and little to no defense. When we played you all, it felt like we were preparing for the defense, not the offense.
Coach Davis: I think people think in regard to “playing fast,” and I think that for good reason. I’ve watched a lot of teams, and most of them aren’t concerned with playing much defense. Our goal was to force a turnover, first, a bad shot, second, one shot, third.
The first year we committed to the pressing game, we forced 28 turnovers a game, won 19 games in a row, and averaged 102 points per game. And I learned this in the first year - the pressing game wasn’t about doing it perfectly. We always had one, two, or three guys doing it wrong, but they played so hard and put so much pressure on the basketball that people just kept making mistakes even while weren’t doing it right.
