The Assistant Coach’s Impact: Beyond Wins and Losses
Wins are the head coach’s currency—we all know that. But what’s the currency for assistant coaches?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
Assistants aren’t always measured by the scoreboard. They rarely get the spotlight. But they often shape the foundation of a team.
They’re the ones who:
• Build trust with players.
• Refine the details others overlook.
• Challenge ideas when no one else will.
• Hold the culture steady when things shake.
This work doesn’t show up in the box score—but without it, the team doesn’t grow.
And if the environment doesn’t empower assistants to contribute in these ways, it’s not just limiting the staff. It’s capping the team’s ceiling.
So here’s the question:
How should the impact of assistant coaches be measured?
Is it loyalty? Player development? Constructive challenge? Quiet leadership?
