Against zone defenses, offenses will often try to pin the bottom outside defender and skip a pass to the opposite corner. A simple breakdown drill I like to use is this 2v2 game. Play goes live on the coach’s pass. Suggestion: Limit the number of dribbles or use a :06 shot clock.

For those who have been here a while, you’ve most likely seen Coach Neeley’s breakdown of his 2-1-2 aggressive zone defense. Over the summer, a number of coaches have reached out with additional questions about the 2-1-1. This week, I’m sharing several resources as well as a few drills to address some of the common questions about this defensive system.

When the ballhandler attacks the gap, defenders have to be quick to account for all perimeter players. Again, use a short shot clock for more reps.
