Coach Mark Byington’s Vanderbilt Commodores (15-0) are off to the program’s best start in 20 years!

Led by dynamic backcourt playmakers, Tyler Tanner and Duke Miles, the Commodores find themselves ranked in the top 10 in EFG% (8th), scoring offense (9th), adjusted offensive efficiency (9th), and 2-point shooting (5th).

One of Byington’s most-often used actions? Classic Spain action. Here’s an inside look at several ways Vandy incorporates Spain into their halfcourt offense

Double Ram Spain Exit

“Ram action” refers to when a player screens for a teammate who then sets a ball screen for the ball-handler.

In this set, Vandy will use a “double Ram” with both 3 and 2 setting a kind of stagger screen for the 5 (Frame 1). As 5 sprints into the ball screen, 4 steps in from the corner to set what’s called an “exit screen” for 3 (Frame 2). At the same time, 2 turns around and screens x5, freeing up 5 for a roll to the rim.
