KSU Assistant Coach talks Wildcats’ Culture
This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, Kansas State Wildcats' assistant coach, Rodney Perry, provides an inside look at Jerome Tang's program. He shares a behind-the-scenes look at the Wildcats tournament run last season along with advice for those seeking to advance in the coaching ranks.
Miller: What’s a lesson you took from Coach Tang in that first season that you’ll carry with you?
Perry: There was one time where Desi Sills had a transition situation where he was really great at being able to attack the basket, but he stopped and shot a 3. I said, “Desi!” and then Coach Tang turned to me and was like, “We ain’t saying nothing to him, except ‘Just play. Good job. Let’s go’. We do out coaching practice and in film study, but on game day, they play.”
Miller: Just watching your team play last year, you can see that freedom the players were encouraged to play with, even in that all-oop play in the NCAA Tournament game against Michigan State.
Perry: They had all the confidence in the world. Most player wouldn’t attempt that during crunch time of a game like that. Our guys were like, “Hey, it’s what we’ve done all year, so let’s do it!”

Play of the Week: Baylor’s Jump Ball Play
Did you see Wednesday’s ally-oop tip-off play that everyone is trying this year? Baylor has had success with it a few times this year. Duke sniffed it out though. You tip it backwards then screen for the guy who won the tip (i.e., You're screening the other team's jump man.).

Play fast. Shoot 3’s. Make the “one more” pass. Here’s how this full-court small-sided game works:
🔸put 7:00 on clock
🔸4v3 each way (shooter steps off each transition)
🔸players can drive it, but all shots must be 3s (defender must stay with driver)
🔸:08 shot clock
🔸every 3PM is 1 point
