Player Development with FGCU’s Karl Smesko
On this week’s A Quick Timeout podcast, Coach Karl Smesko, head coach for the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles women's basketball team, provides insight into early season development, introducing offensive skills and systems, and ideas for improved shooting.
Q: What does your early season player development entail?
Smesko: A lot of stuff is just 2-on-2. There are coaches who give different looks each time. So, you could be in line watching the player in front of you, but that might not be what your decision is. So, you’re going to have to say, “Hey was this the time I should have hesitated and gone all the way to the basket? Should I have made a pocket pass? Rejected the screen?” We call it “coupling.” We work on skills with the decision-making.
