Mark Cascio on Offensive Adjustments vs. Specific Defensive Systems
This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, Courtside Consulting's Mark Cascio breaks down offensive adjustments for both gap defenses and pressure defenses. He also shares ideas for generating more 3PAs within your conceptual offense.
Q: What adjustments need to be considered against extreme GAP defenses?
Cascio: We tried to stick to actions we already knew. Some actions were designed to be more effective against the sag, some actions against pressure man-to-man. So, without having to install something new, lean on those actions that were more effective against sagging defenses.
One of those actions was fan. We like to hit the boomerang on fan. So, we’re giving it up then getting it right back, creating closeouts and trying to get into dominoes.
Cascio: I think step-up ball screens are great against sagging defenses because even if you can twist the under, a step-up doesn’t allow defenders to go under. They basically have to choose left or right.
And then as you get the ball moving, we like to get that “Down, Up, Over.” One thing gap defenses have to work a lot on is closeouts. So, can we just create closeout, closeout, and then we crack the shell of the defense.

Play of the Week: Alabama Crimson Tide 4-Low Backdoor
I love a good backdoor set. This one out of a 4-Low BLOB. The stagger at the top of the key occupies any help defenders. The in-bounder steps hard to the ball to set up his defender then back cuts for a finish inside.
SSG of the Week: 2v1 Transition
Get a lot of 2-on-1 transition situations with this fast-paced SSG. Here’s what’s diagrammed:
Frame 1: Players 1 and 2 play offense vs. player 7. Player 2 finishes with a layup (The player who shoots is the defender in the next rep.).
Frame 2: Player 3 gets the ball out of rim then passes to Player 5 as Player 2 sprints to the half-court circle then sprints back to play defense. Now, Players 5 and 6 are on offense against Player 2.
