It’s arguably the best Maui Invitational field ever. The best field means some of the best coaches and the best Xs & Os in country. Here are a few of my favorite plays from Day 1 in Honolulu.
Tennessee Volunteers - 2-3 Zone BLOB
Rick Barnes’ group dispatched Syracuse, 73-56, on Day 1 of the Maui Invitational. Although Jim Boeheim is no longer roaming the Orange sideline, Adrian Autry still uses the 2-3 zone from time to time, most often when defending BLOBs.
I love this BLOB from the Vols. They create a gap in between the 1st and 2nd layer of the zone for a 3PA for the inbounder (Frame 1). But, there’s also the option to find the soft spot in the middle of the zone then quickly feed the 1 on the slip after the screen (Frame 2).
Tennessee Volunteers - 5-Out Zoom
Early offense out of 5-Out uses Zoom action to create a scoring opportunity for the guard coming out of the corner. If you look at the video, it looks like the 3 missed a pin down from 5 towards the end. That’s another scoring opportunity if a drive isn’t there for Player 2.
