Ideas for Evaluating Your Program at Season's End with Ryan Pedon, Illinois State Redbirds
This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, Ryan Pedon talks about pivoting when things don't go according to plan, evaluating players and staff, and cultivating your program in the off-season.
Q: Coming in, was there anything you had planned on doing but then soon realized, “This just isn’t going to work”?
Pedon: What you’re referring to is what we call “the pivot.” You think it’s going to be one way, and then you’re pivoting once you get into it. On a small scale, we do that every day. You’ve got to be agile and mobile. You’ve got a view of the way you want to do it, then you get into it, and it may not exactly work best or most efficient that way. Or the skill set of the guys in your locker room may not be best suited for doing it that way. So, I try to be as open-minded as I can. I’m very convicted in how I coach, and I’m tied to my convictions. In that same regard, I think you have to be flexible, especially in how college basketball and the rules have changed. Roster building has changed. The daily climate as our lives as coaches has changed. I think you’ve got to be willing to pivot and adjust and adapt.

Play of the Week: NC State Rescreen BLOB
This weekend, I saw several teams using a rescreen action on inbounds plays to confuse the defense. When x5 helps on the shooter on the rescreen, the 5 dives to the rim. If there’s no help, you still have the chance for an open look for your shooter.
SSG of the Week: 1v1 Contested Jumpers
Making small group shooting competitions fun this offseason. The offense moves towards the FT line then chooses a left or right L-cut. The defender must touch the opposite elbow then contest the jump shot.
