Offensive Triggers with Tyler Coston
SAVI Coaching's Tyler Coston explains "Flow Game," a 4v4 small-sided game to teach offensive concepts and triggers. (Click here for the full clinic.)
Q: Can you describe your version of Pace and Space Offense?
Coston: Mike Neighbors at Arkansas really started me on this Race and Space journey. He calls his transition, “race and space,” and I’ve taken that and built out 10 layers of offensive principles that rely heavily on what Mike has used for years with his teams.
I call it “Race and Space” because every coach in the world wants to play in transition more, and every coach knows you get a higher efficiency shot in transition than you do against a set defense. Knowing that doesn’t mean your team is going to do it. What I think the best teachers do is build a system that’s going to improve their players individually at the skills needed to get more shots in transition, to make the reads needed to get great shots, not just quick shots. And so, it’s so much more than playing fast. The goal’s not a quick shot. the goal is better shots. The effectiveness of your offense will always distill down to what kinds of shots your offense is generating.

Play of the Week: Minnesota Timberwolves Horns Wing Flare
I spent my holidays up north in Minnesota, which meant a lot of Timberwolves games the last two weeks. They have the luxury of having a 7’er who they can put in split action on post feeds.
Here’s the play: Horns flare for Karl-Anthony Towns. Post feed. Then the point guard sets the flare screen for Towns.

SSG of the Week: 3v3 King of the Court (5-Out Offense)
A lot of teams are now transitioning 5-Out in early offense. Aways, rescreens, staggers, double ball screens - those are just a few of the options with the top 3 players.
Early on, we’ll play a lot of 3v3 King of the Court (i.e., if you score, you stay on offense) with those top 3 players. After every rep, the offense must go and touch the opposite volleyball attack line before playing early offense.
