Pace & Space Offense with Mackenzie Novak

This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, New Mexico’s Mackenzie Novak breaks down Pace & Space Offense. Coach Novak shares skill development drills, reads within the offense, and more! Film study included below as well.

Q: Having taught conceptual offense several times now, what are things you’ve learned that you wish you’d have known from the start?

Novak: The first thing is teaching the players to keep their dribble alive. That brings everything together. You have to teach things [about spacing and player movement] in a segmented order. But keeping your dribble alive - you’ve got to teach that right away. The more we worked on that, the better shots we got.

The second thing is related to film. We did “positive offense” and “instructional offense,” but we tried not to get carried away. Three or four clips. Every day. That really helped speed up players’ learning.

Some of my Favorite Concepts

Over the past 4 years of running conceptual offense, I’ve found that some concepts 1) are more likely than others to show up in the half court and 2) are more effective than others. Here are some of my favorite concepts…
