Incorporating Film into Your Program
This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, Coach Dave Nedbalek (Oral Roberts University), Mark Schwitzgable (Walsh University), and Nick Pasqua (Converse University) discuss the role of film in their programs.
On of the things we discussed is the most common question I get from coaches…
Q: How much film is too much film?
Coach Nedbalek: A lot of the research points to groups of 3s. And we try to cap ourselves at 15 minutes. You end up getting to where you have so many priorities and so many things to focus on that we’re not focusing on really anything. So our staff has taken that approach, especially early on. What are our non-negotiables? Those are the things we’re hitting most adamantly.
Coach Schwitzgable: I have a lot of rules in my head that I like to follow. Keep it as short as possible. My last edit. I kept it at 10 clips. I try to pick only about 3 clips of the same thing. It can get repetitive, and they lose focus if you show the same thing over and over again. We do a lot of ours on the court. We’ll roll the TV out to the floor. We’ll watch 30-60 seconds of a scout then we’ll go guard it. We try to avoid standing around or lulling them to sleep in the film room as much as possible.

Play of the Week: Auburn Tigers’ Middle Ball Screen to Zoom
One of the reasons zoom action is so effective is because you’re putting pressure on the big defender to guard laterally. Auburn forced Baylor’s bigs to guard multiple actions, which proved to be a challenge for the Bears. In this set, the Baylor big shows on the middle ball screen. He then has to retreat on the pass back to the screener. Then, Auburn immediately goes into zoom. Baylor’s big man is to slow off the handoff. It’s a layup for the Auburn guard.
SSG of the Week: WAR Game
A player-favorite. Split your group into two teams. Players line up on opposite sidelines. The coach calls players' numbers (1v1 all the way up to 5v5). The team first to the ball is offense while the other team is then defense. Use regular scoring.
