“We want to play the fastest tempo possible, minimize turnovers, and still take quality shots.”
— Mike Neighbors, Arkansas Razorbacks women’s basketball head coach
Why Functionally Fast?
It allows us to compete and beat the best teams on our schedule.
It’s fun — for players, coaches and fans.
It allows us to peak at the end of the season.
Shot Percentages and the Shot Clock
The system was a response to the common theory that the later you go into a possession, the lower your shot percentage. Based off that, Neighbors and his staff tracked their percentages related the amount of time left on the shot clock in each possession.
21-30: 57%
11-20: 36%
1-10: 7%
Neighbors’ conclusion:
“The faster you play (without turning the ball over), the better chance you have to win.”
