Cultivating Winning Habits with Mike Netti
This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, Ohio State’s Mike Nettti discusses ideas for practice planning, including player development, creating a competitive environment, incorporating assistant coaches, and reviewing practice performance for improved future performance.
Q: What role does video and film have in your practices?
Netti: We usually start each practice with some sort of video. It could be based on culture, maybe it’s one possession of clean-up - we have to sprint back in transition better or communicate better. It could be one clip. It could be three clips. It could be an interview that you take from the NBA - a guy talking about his understanding of his role. I think that sets a message of where we are for the day, and then we jump into practice.
Q: What is it about the drills that make a difference?
Netti: We all use similar drills. It’s the habits that you’re creating. For us, it starts on the defensive end, and then it gets to the competitive stuff and more of the execution towards the end of practice. We all try to sell to our players that “This is a program where practice matters.” Something specific has to matter. Whether it’s your effort, your detail, your defensive understanding. For us, it’s a program where effort and detail matter, and we’re going to do it with pace. That provides an identity to what your practices are.
