UNC National Champ, Joel Berry, on Coaching the UNC-Duke Rivalry
This week on A Quick Timeout podcast, former UNC Tarheel Joel Berry joins the podcast to talk about preparing for a rivalry game, winning in the postseason, and his favorite memories from Duke vs. UNC.
Q: What are the challenges and what are some of the adjustments you make when playing a team a third time?
Berry: You get to that third matchup, and it’s like a rock fight. The opposing coaches know exactly what you’re trying to do. They even know your counters. It’s about taking everything you do and doing it in the most efficient and effective way. Your cuts have to be stronger, setting up your guy off the pick-and roll has to be on point, not rushing to get to the next action. Then, it’s playing read and react and just making plays based on what the defense gives you.

Play of the Week: Duke Game-Winner
Go back a few years ago to Duke’s matchup with Wake Forest. A simple end-of-game action for a shooter. It looks like a pin down for the 2. Reject the screen and move towards the basket for a pin down from the 5. A little misdirection from towards the 3 then come back to the shooter.
SSG of the Week: Duke’s 4v4v4 Ping Pong
We call this 4v4v4 continuous. Split your squad into teams of 4. Start 4v4 on one end with a team of 4 waiting on the other end. If a team scores, they stay on offense and transition to the other end. If a team gets a stop (turnover or defensive rebound), they move to offense on the opposite end.

Duke Horns Elevator
This Duke Horns set became popular a couple years ago during Coach K’s final run to the Final Four. The defense is so worried about the shooter that 5 ends up open on the slip to the rim.
