Interested in adding a simple layer of complexity to your 5-Out to make your actions harder to guard? This week, we dive into Coach John Tauer’s 5-Out offensive actions. Coach Tauer has been the head coach at St. Thomas since 2011. He led the Tommies to an NCAA D3 national championship in 2016 before their move to the NCAA D1’s Summit League.
BONUS: In addition, I’m sharing two small-sided games from the Tommies!
5-Out Offense Ideas
Double Pin to PNR
A lot of teams will set a drag screen pout of 5-Out into a basic pick-and-roll. Instead, center the ball then cut the 1 and 2 towards the block and lift the corner players (Frame 1). Next, the guards could come straight off the pin downs (Frame 2); you could have them cross first then run off the screens; or you could even run a floppy action. Finally, the 5 can pass to either side then get into normal PNR.
