At this year’s NABC Convention, Gonzaga’s assistant coach, R-Jay Barsh, shared a few of the Bulldogs’ off-season player development drills. Fundamental to man-to-man defense is the ability to go from guarding the basketball to jumping to the ball to guarding the basketball again. Here’s a simple 1v1 game to rep early with players as you build your man defense.

• Offensive player starts with the ball then passes to the coach.

• The defender jumps to the basketball.

• The coach passes back to the player on offense.

• The ballhandler has 3 dribbles to score.

1v1 Guard Your Yard

Another 1v1 game to work on players’ fundamentals and on their on-ball defense. This is a variation on “guard your yard” drills.

• 1 dribbles to the elbow, lands on two feet, then throws a bounce pass to 2.

• 2 finishes at the rim, grabs the ball out of the net, then passes back to 1 at the top of the key.

• Play is live 1v1 with player 1 having 3 dribbles to score.

3v3 Ball Screen Trap with Short Roll

Against, teams who blitz (trap) ball screens, it’s important for not just your ballhandler to know what to do, but also the other players involved. This 3v3 game teaches ballhandlers to read the first line and second line of defense, while also teaching the screener and player on the backside to come to open space.

On the trap, the screener short rolls towards the nail. With the coach in the back player help defense, he either tags the roller or stays on the player lifting behind the screen. The ballhander reads the coach then passes to the open teammate.

2v1 Ball Screen Reads

If your players are just starting out, this 2v1 drill can help players improve decision-making needed to read the first level of defense (i.e., the defender(s) involved with the ball screen itself).

The defender passes out to the screener (Player 5) then chases the pass out to defend. 5 passes to the 1 then chases the pass to set a screen. The defender chooses to either stay with the ball handler or stay with the screener. If the defender stays with the ballhandler, 1 passes back to 5 on the pop or hits 5 on the roll. If the defender stays with 5, 1 drives to score.

Hurley’s 4 Core Principles for Defense

In this coaching clinic, Hurley shares the team defensive principles for his two-time national championship UConn Huskies team.

1) Strength of the “Pack“

None of your behaviors, mindset, the things you’re saying – those things can only make the “pack” stronger. You cannot allow yourself to do anything that’s going to make the pack weaker.

2) Consistent improvement

A focus on the daily process. Be obsessed with getting better, as a player and as a person.

3) Relentless Competitive Effort

We should never question if you’re passionate enough or competitive enough. You better be a “dawg” or you’re never going to continue to take the next step to excel.

4) Mindful communication

Have some emotional intelligence when you’re communicating with others. Have self-awareness, like if you’re playing like trash, then you probably shouldn’t be barking at other people. Have situational awareness. Ask yourself, “Is this a good time for me, if I’m a leader, to jump on a teammate who’s struggling?”

• Offense stands in a box shape (i.e., Ignore the halfcourt line. This has nothing to do with “over-and-back”)

• :20 on the clock then switch offense to defense.

• Defense must trap the ball.

• Offense is allowed 1 evade dribble off their spot.

• Scoring: 1 point for a deflection. 3 points for a steal.

• Split your team into dark and white

• Scoring: Deflection or turnover for the defense is 1 point. Normal scoring for the offense.

Train players to shoot under duress with this 3-man game.

• Set up cones in a triangle on the wing. The two players start side-by-side.

• On “go,” the shooter runs in a blast cut off the two cones (simulating a stagger
  screen.

• The defender runs over the tip of the triangle then contests the jump shot.

🏀 Contested Shooting 1v1

A quick contest puts pressure on the shooter to practice quick-release long-range shots.

• On the coach’s pass, the defender must touch the free throw line before contesting the shot.

🏀 Ghost Screen Shooting

I’ve noticed a bit of a resurgence of ghost screening in the NBA, especially guard-to-guard ghost screens (see Kon Knueppel and the Charlotte Hornets). Screen, slip, sling it!

• The shooter starts opposite the coach.

• After the pass out, the player sets a ghost screen on the defender then spaces towards the wing.

• The defender contests the jump shot.
